AUSTRALIAN

Government and regulators

Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA)
A Federal Statutory Authority regulating free-to-air radio, TV, digital broadcasting and Internet content in Australia. Complaints about offensive internet content can be made through this site. ACMA is also responsible for regulating radio communications and the radiofrequency spectrum. The ACMA regulates industry compliance with mandatory standards and voluntary codes of practice. A complaint about a breach of these standards and codes can be made through this site.

Communications Alliance Ltd
The Communications Alliance was formed in 2006 to provide a unified voice for the Australian communications industry and to lead it into the next generation of converging networks, technologies and services. It replaced ACIF, an industry owned company established by the telecommunications industry to further communications self-regulation. A series of codes that apply to the telecommunications industry can be found at the Communications Alliance website.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
An independent statutory authority that administers the Trade Practices Act 1974 and the Prices Surveillance Act 1983 and has additional responsibilities under other legislation. Complaints may be made about: anti-competitive and unfair market practices, mergers or acquisitions of companies, product safety/liability, and third party access to facilities of national significance here .

SCAMwatch
SCAMwatch is a website run by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC). The aim of SCAMwatch is to provide information to consumers and small business about how to recognise, avoid and report scams. Scams that are reported to SCAMwatch will be analysed by the ACCC.

Australian Government Business Entry Point
The Business Entry Point is an initiative of the Federal Government. It provides free online services and information for Australian business via the website. It includes information and services from federal, state, and territory government agencies, as well as some local councils. Questions on business matters can be answered via email.

Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts
This website provides information about the Federal Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts' wide range of policy areas.

IP Australia
IP Australia is the federal government agency that grants rights in patents, trademarks and designs.

National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE)
Commonwealth agency for information economy issues. It works on developing, overseeing, and coordinating Commonwealth Government policy on electronic commerce, online services and the Internet.

Office of Film and Literature Classification
Responsible for the classification of: film & video; publications; and computer games in Australia. Note: the film & video classification guidelines are used for the regulation of internet content.

Office of Small Business
The Office of Small Business considers and develops small business policy issues for the Federal Government.

Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman
The TIO is an independent non-government scheme. The Ombudsman aims to help consumers and telecommunications companies resolve disputes.

NGO and Community

Arts Law Centre (Aus)
A non-profit, national community legal centre for the arts provides specialised legal and business advice and referral services, professional development resources and advocacy for artists and arts organisations.

auDA
au Domain Administration Ltd is an Australian not-for-profit company vested with the responsibility of operating the .au domain for the benefit of all stakeholders.

Australian Copyright Council – Online Copyright Information ACC IPR Copyright Intellectual Property
An independent non-profit organisation that provides an online information centre with: publications; information sheets; news; seminars and training; advice; and submissions on Copyright policy and law reform issues.

Coalition against unsolicited bulk email in Australia
CAUBE.AU was formed to represent the views of those in Australia who are opposed to the advertising practices which are collectively known as email spam. Provides advice on how to combat spam.

Communications Law Centre
CLC is an independent, non-profit, public interest organisation specialising in media and communications law and policy. Its work focuses on: research; teaching; public education; and legal advice. OzNet law is the internet legal practice of the CLC.

Community Legal Centres
A list of community legal centres in Australia is available at the National Association of Community Legal Centre's website. Refer also Community Law Online (next) to access Victoria's online community legal centre.

Community Law Online
Victoria's online community legal centre provides practical legal information, links to other online legal resources and details the services offered by Victoria's community legal centres. The site is an initiative of the Federation of Community Legal Centres (Vic.) Inc.

Electronic Frontiers Australia
The Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA) aims to promote and protect the freedoms and rights of electronic network users and promote the use of electronic networks through it many submissions to the Government.

NetAlert – Community Advisory Body on Internet Content
A community advisory body on Internet content established by the Aust Government. Advice is aimed at parents and young people.

Small Enterprise Telecommunications Centre Limited
The Small Enterprise Telecommunications Centre Limited (SETEL) is a national consumer association advancing the telecommunications and e-commerce interests of Australian small business.

Victoria Law Foundation
Victoria Law Foundation educates the community and supports the legal profession and justice system providing legal information simply stated. The web site includes many free, plain language, legal publications including a pro bono (ie. without cost) directory for consumers and lawyers.

Australian Direct Marketing Association
Provides information on Direct Marketing in Australia including: online marketing guidelines and codes; news releases; and events.

Australian Information Industry Association
An association that aims to lead and represent the information industry to maximise the potential of the Australian economy by: influencing the Government; marketing; forums; providing up to date industry information; tools and services; and networking.

Internet Industry Association
Australia’s national industry body for internet commerce, content and connectivity.

Tasmania IT & T
TasIT represents and provides support for the Internet Industry within Tasmania and also maintains a register of IT and AT industries and their capabilities.

Western Australian Internet Association
The Western Australian Internet Association (Inc.) represents and provides support for the Internet community in Western Australia.

Attorney-General Department (Window on the Law)
A-G’s site where Commonwealth, State & Territory legislation and cases can be found.

Australasian Legal Information Institute (AUSTLII)
A joint facility of UTS and UNSW Faculties of Law, providing an online search tool for an extensive range of legal databases. Contains the full text of legislation and court decisions for most Australian jurisdicitons.

Australian Law on the Internet (National Library of Australia)
A catalogue page of the National Library. A good site to start research on any internet legal issues with annotated links to other relevant sites.

Centre for Electronic Commerce, Monash University
A Monash University site administered by industry experts to provide consulting expertise, research, and education and training services in the area of electronic commerce.

Findlaw Australia
A free resource site containing practical, in-depth and timely information on legal issues including recent cases, recent legislation and practical articles.

Information Technology On Line
The Information Technology Online (ITOL) Program is a Commonwealth Government grants program administered by the National Office for the Information Economy (NOIE).

Incorporator.com.au
Incorporator.com.au is a privately run website offering a quick and simple way to form a company online. An intelligent, automated interview process will tailor the necessary documents for any type of Australian company. This site is also a great source of information on all aspects of company law.

Australian Privacy Commissioner
An independent office that has handles complaints under the federal Privacy Act 1988. Complaints under the NSW Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 should be directed to the NSW Privacy Commissioner .

Consumers Online
A Commonwealth Government site with information on consumer rights and with relevant links to other government web sites.

Shopping Online – Facts for Consumers from Federal Government
Contains fact sheets about buying online. They provide clear answers to a number of the most direct questions related to shopping on the Internet.

Law Society of New South Wales
The professional association for solicitors in NSW. Provides a catalogued directory of legal practitioners in NSW.

Law Society of South Australia
The professional association for lawyers in SA. Provides an online referral service to legal practitioners catalogued by map location and area of law.

Law Society of the Australian Capital Territory
The professional association for lawyers in the ACT. Provides a listing of law firms in ACT alphabetically and by suburb.

Law Society of the Northern Territory
The professional association for lawyers in the NT. Provides an online referral service to legal practitioners and listing of NT law firms.

Law Society of Western Australia
The professional association for lawyers in the WA. Provides a referral service to legal practitioners via contact only.

Law Society of Queensland
The professional association for lawyers in the QLD. Provides an online referral service to legal practitioners catalogued with a number of search options.

Cybercrime, Justice, Law and Society – A Security Portal for Information System Security Professionals
Comprehensive computer and network security resource for Information System Security Professionals. The cybercrime section deals expansively with US laws and links to general information, legislation and cases.

FindLaw Cases and Codes
A free resource site containing practical, in-depth and timely information on legal issues including recent cases, recent legislation and practical articles. The US site includes case law and legislation categorised by state.

Identity Theft homepage
U.S. government's central website for information about identity theft. This site is maintained by the Federal Trade Commission. Updated regularly, includes: government reports and Congressional testimony, law enforcement updates, and links to other sites with helpful information about identity theft.

Tech Law – US Internet Law News
Provides daily updated articles on technology law within the US. Articles are categorised by subject or can be accessed by the search facility.

Internet Law and Policy

Chinalaw Web
Provides information about Chinese law and the legal system in greater China. In-depth analysis of the four different legal jurisdictions in China. Use the excellent search options for specific information.

Internet Law and Policy (Singapore)
Singaporean site that provides relevant links to sites throughout the world. The annotated links are sorted into broad categories. Links are not centred on Singaporean law but Internet law and policy generally.

Se-il’s Korean Law
A personal site run by Se-il, a Korean law student now studying at Virginia law school. Provides useful references to articles and cases on Cyberspace law.

Asian Studies Virtual Library
A global collaborative project which provides access in bibliographic and in hypertext terms to networked scholarly documents, resources and information systems concerned with or relevant to Asian Studies.

DG internal market
European Commission's site that provides news and information on: Data Protection; E-Commerce; Intellectual Property; and Media in the Information Society.

GLOBAL

Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
ICANN is the non-profit corporation that was formed to assume responsibility for the IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions.

Internet Names World Wide
The INWW provides registrar services in the .com .net and .org domain spaces.

Global Internet Project (GIP)
The Global Internet Project is an independent, non-partisan organisation consisting of a group of senior executives. Provides GIP original publications as well as links to key documents produced by other organisations and companies.

World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO)
An international organisation dedicated to promoting the use and protection of intellectual property through its administration of 23 international treaties that deal with different aspects of intellectual property.

The W3 Consortium (W3C)
The W3C develops common protocols that promote the evolution and interoperability of the web.
